December 25th

Merry Christmas Phoenix Cadet Squadron!!

Reminder - our next meeting is set for January 7th, 2010 - Squadron Blgd - uniform of the day will be BDUs.

I want to get the word out about a program that the Wing has asked us to take on. Our Squadron has been tasked with heading up the newly formed Utah Wing Emergency Service Communications Program. Specifically, we (and by that I mean cadets & senior members) would be tasked to respond to "real world" call outs - set up a communication center for local Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue Teams, Search Aircraft, and ground teams in the field. Real world call outs include missing people, downed planes, and disaster responses.

This isn't a program where individual participation is mandatory - but if you want to participate - you will be trained and used on deployments.

Details will be briefed at the next meeting (since I don't have all of them myself right now)- but I'm looking for some initial comments on what your thoughts are.

Pass this information on via text, IM, Facebook, etc.. to our members so we can have some discussion about it in January.

Wreaths Across America order form

Wreaths Across America Fundraiser

Our squadron can fundraise by taking orders for the WAA program. It is part of a national program, has many years of success and always includes a great program in December.

By taking an order from a friend, neighbor, relative or your own family, a person or family can dedicate a wreath to a fallen soldier or vet at the start of the winter holiday season, when we most find comfort in giving. CAP however, does not allow cadets to go door-to-door, so generally, just asking around produces a number of donations.

An order consists of one $15 check or money order for each wreath ordered. The checks go to the squadron fundraiser by Nov. 28th, and are then sent to a national team that orders the wreaths. (Make them out to WAA) The wreaths are then shiped via truck to each state on December 12th and delivered to the veteran cemetary. On that day, and simultaneously across the country, cadets, veterans, military groups, or any civic group enjoys a program dedicating and honoring, teaching and distributing. It will be held at 10am at the Utah State Veteran’s Cemetery on that Saturday. Wreaths are placed by cadets, familys, etc.
The goal is to have one wreath for every headstone!

Last year, Utah doubled the number placed on that day. Squadrons received $5 for each wreath, which was utilized for flights, supplies, or other needs determined by the squadron.

Please send any funds and the names of contributors to Public Affairs in the Squadron (I will pick them up if you call me). Be sure to put the event on your calendar, whether you donate or not. It is really a super opportunity for cadets to participate in a national event, and gain knowledge while honoring those who served.

Thanks for any support you can give. An application is available here to download for each wreath, or it is on line at Wreathsacrossamerica.org .

Lt Sue Chamberlin, Public Affairs Officer
Phoenix Squadron, Ut Wing Civil Air Patrol

PS
We cannot take orders for specific veteran headstones or people, but that can be done by accessing the Wreaths Across America website. We cannot get funding for those orders.

Letter from the new Wing Commander

Utah Wing members,

The only constant in life seems to be uncertainty and change.

One part of the Utah Civil Air Patrol that does not change I can assure you, is accomplishment of our missions, education, activities, having fun and all that encompasses Utah CAP is done by our members. While commanders and leaders set direction and goals, it's people like you who get things done. This will never change.

I'm excited to get out of my comfort zone for the next few years and serve as the Utah Wing Commander. Col. Bob Bost has done an outstanding job as commander and that's essentially the reason I was willing to submit my name for consideration. Because members of the wing have and continue to have outstanding values and show great dedication, it's exciting to look forward.

Where are we headed? That's primarily up to you. The Titan Drill Team has set the example and given us a model: To achieve excellence, a TEAM must work together with a common goal and with dedication. It takes hard work. It must be a team effort.

It's easy to sit on the sideline and criticize, and this accomplishes very little. When good things happen, it's people like you making the difference. If members want to complain and shoot arrows at the program, my feeling is to simply ignore them. If members are engaged in the work and find ways to make improvements, I listen. I don't have all the answers and don't pretend to.
I like to take notes and learn and listen and help make things better.

I cannot promise that every qualified member will participate in every mission. I cannot promise every squadron with pilots will have an aircraft assigned. I will promise to ask questions such as: Why does a squadron with 10 pilots not have qualified staff to run missions within their geographical area? Or: Why did you recruit 20 new cadets without a support system in place for them so they can rapidly become part of CAP? It's not about numbers, it's about dedication and quality and knowledge and experience.

We're also victim of our own success. You've been noticed! Agencies facing economic stress realize that using a group of well-trained and disciplined volunteers is a good move. We will see increased requests for CAP involvement! How we respond is up to you as this is a team effort.

I received a call last week where an individual demanded that a certain program continue and in a certain way. Admittedly, the program under discussion has been outstanding and should continue. Yet, the individual, while making demands, was unwilling to help. If you want quality programs, be prepared to pitch in and help.

So what's going to change? I don't know. Certainly some members are exhausted and needing to refocus on other areas of CAP interest. That's OK. Others are willing to continue and offer their time and talents. We'll structure the wing staff/organization to use what ever talents and expertise are available. We'll use technology and expertise so we can work "smarter" and still enjoy all that CAP has to offer. We will be safe and follow CAP's regulations and policies! We will follow the established chain of command.

Communication is important to me and one focus will be to better inform members, customers and interested persons about what the Utah Wing is doing. I invite your comments and questions. I invite you to participate and get involved. If you have a request, please do your own homework and offer background as to why your request should be considered. Don't just remain silent or complain, but offer solutions and ways to make things better.

CAP to me is an "action verb." Anyone can sit and watch and complain. Excellence is an attribute of members who dig in and get involved and contribute. These members put egos aside and work together. It's a team and we are that team. If you don't play well in the sandbox, we'll have challenges. Please recall the days you first joined CAP and ponder what kept you in the program.

I would say you were given opportunities to participate and that someone helped by showing you the ropes and was your mentor. Every member has the right to have expectations met and be part of CAP. Let's not recruit and then ignore. Let's be kinder and more supportive.

I consider the slate "clean" and really don't want to hear of past offenses and hurts and wrongdoings. Other than a couple of pending actions that are in some official corrective channels, I don't want you to dredge up past events as evidence for predicting future actions. Don't waste my time! You have my trust and support -- so don't give reason to change that view.

If you are serving as a member of wing staff or are in squadron and group leadership, please accept my request to remain in place during the transition. Let me know where you are willing to serve! Please let me know of your desires and interests. You may not be an "expert" but if you're willing to develop expertise, that alone may qualify you for a position you want. Communicate! It's all about developing expertise.

I am sensitive that each of us has friends, families, employment and other demands on our time. Some of you are retired and we all have differing amounts of available time. Let's be considerate in making requests and in understanding that everyone cannot simply stop what they're doing and do CAP things. My wife is supportive but does not expect me to abandon her for CAP events. My employer still expects me to accomplish what they pay me to do. CAP should not cause disharmony for families or adversely impact a job. Situations change -- let's be considerate (and appreciative) of time and expertise offered in service to others as CAP members!

Finally, one of the first CAP publications I read in the months prior to the wing command selection process was CAP Pamphlet 50-2, "Civil Air Patrol Core Values." It's going to be a primary reference for me. (Find it here: http://members.gocivilairpatrol.com/media/cms/u_082503081659.pdf)

So here's a challenge to you: In this .pdf file there is a typographical error that I was first to identify, according to the appropriate National CAP staff officer with responsibility for this pamphlet. As you read this, look for the error. The first few of you (cadets included) that (on your own, without help from others) find the same error will be treated to lunch or dinner with me.

Thank you very much for your support and service. If you have concerns and/or questions, please communicate! As I am looking forward for Utah Wing, it is an exciting view.

Sincerely,
Jerry Wellman, Lt. Col., CAP

Sept 24th

PT Week - bring your gym gear - activities at the squadron building.

Testing opportunities are available -

Remember Wendover Air Show is this weekend - see below for details.

If your having communication problems (you don't know whats going on with activities, schedules, etc..) - let C/Lt Pratt, C/CMSgt Stewart or Lt Fernandez know. Several cadets (and parents) have voiced concerns about getting the word out on different topics - our solution was to ask Ms Facer to be our point of contact for posting of information on the bulletin board, publishing the news letter, etc...

If you have any other concerns, problems, etc... step up and be part of the solution - together, we will find the answers.

Wendover Airshow 09

This is a part of the email sent from Wing - its long, but has good information in it about the Airshow and what our mission will be there.
----------------
Good Afternoon Utah Wing,

Its that time of year again! CAP has been asked to provide some great assistance at the Wendover Airshow. Last year, 74 CAP members assisted the over 10,000 spectators that attended the '08 show. This year, the crowds are expected to gather 5000-10,000 people.

This is to request Senior Member and Cadet volunteers to help staff the Airshow and related events. The show runs all day on Saturday, the 26th of September.

All CAP volunteers must arrive no later than 1900hrs on Friday, 25th September.

Our obligation to the show will end at 1700hrs on Saturday afternoon.

CAP will be providing Dinner Friday, and three meals on Saturday. Dinner Saturday will be at 1730. Members may choose to out-process from the event at anytime after 1700.

The cost for each individual will be $25. This will cover fuel for wing equipment, and the four meals that will be served throughout the weekend.

CAP has been asked to staff several areas within the operation.

The Airfield has also requested that CAP provide a color guard (outdoor presentation), and the Utah Wing Honor Guard will be performing.

I will need Senior and Cadet volunteers to step into some "Event Staff" positions.

FOR CADETS, I WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING: Cadet Deputy Commander, Cadet Communications Officer, Cadet Operations Officer, Cadet Ramp Supervisor (2) (Our sqdn has the details on each position - See Cadet Bell (CAC Rep) for details)

For additional information, contact Cadet Andrew Fage at 801-691-8939>or Capt Jason Mettmann at 801-787-7376

Service Project

It was a cold but sunny Saturday morning on January 3rd, but four really tough cadets, one parent and two leaders showed up to removed wreaths from the Veterans' Cemetary in Bluffdale after Wreaths Across America ran its course. The group had to probe and dig for many, and found about half the number placed on that December morning. Because of a White-out at that time, few could remember where the wreaths had been placed, which required a lot more searching for removals. Apparently the Cemetary must remove those wreaths because of machinery and other constraints.

There will be another day set aside to collect the rest of the wreaths as soon as weather permits. Cadets can receive service ribbons for participating in this kind of Wing Project. Kudos to cadets Stewart, Mount, Olivares and Daily for braving it, and to Stephanie Mount for much appreciated support.

---Upcoming FTX Important Information ----

WEBER MINUTE MAN SQUADRON WINTER FTX
COMMANDER c/ 2nd Lt. Carlisi

TO ALL THOSE CADETS AND SENIORS PLANNING TO ATTEND,

We are very excited to have other hands on opportunity for cadets, and any seniors who wish to participate. My thanks to the many senior members from all the squadrons who have volunteered to help us put this on! The focus of this FTX is ground search and rescue certification. Cadets from all squadrons are welcome to attend, but please confirm your plans to attend with your squadron commander or myself by January 8th at the very latest. We must know numbers in advance so the correct amount of food, cots, and tents can be obtained.

When: January 16-18th, arrive Friday evening, leave Sunday afternoon

Where: Hot Springs Camper World, Plymouth, Utah (just north of Tremonton)
We will provide tents and cots. There are indoor showers and restrooms. We will have access to the hot spring pools and hot tubs, so though it is sure to be cold, we will have the opportunity to warm up.

What: Ground Search and Rescue training and certification. This will be taught by Capt. Phippen with the assistance of Cadets who have completed their ground team certifications already. Please Try to complete your 101 card prior to this event. Ask your squadron Commander for assistance if you have not yet completed this. All cadets must bring a form 31 (a CAP permission slip) signed by their parents!

COST: $25 per person

Contact: If you have questions or need further information, please contact Lt. Scott Carlisi at 801-628-6249 or c/ 2nd Lt. Cassandra Carlisi 801-628-7844.

Transportation to and From: Please make arrangements with others from your squadron to travel together to and from this event. Please let us know when you plan to arrive. We will send a map quest attachment with directions to Hot Springs.

Winter FTX’s can be COLD!!!! We should have a lot of fun, but being prepared is essential to staying warm and having a good experience. Below is the list of items each cadet should pack. Please have the highest ranking officer/NCO check all packs prior to leaving for the camp ground!!!
