There are several items this week BE SURE TO SCROLL ALL THE WAY DOWN AND AT LEAST CHECK OUT WHATS BEEN POSTED.
Item 1: (Standing Order) If you are ready for a drill test, a written test or a review board, you must log in right here PRIOR to Wednesday at 1700 hours. There will not be time to schedule these on Thursday when you arrive for the meeting.
Item 2: Stargazing Activity. If you still want to go, post right here asap. Last minute attendees will likely be allowed, but Weber Minuteman needs numbers to properly plan. Plan for an overnight, Saturday night to Sunday morning, leaving Sun morning. You may sign in here to let us know if you want to go. If you signed up at the last meeting, you do not need to sing in here again this week. Details are re-posted here:
Aug. 10 the Ogden Astronomical Society is having a star gazing night on Antelope Island. They will have all their big telescopes out. We are going to attend by at least having a BBQ while we wait for dark and then star gaze, but we thought it might be fun to get a group camp site and just stay overnight. It's a great place for geocaching- hot- but fun. If there is enough interest we will reserve a group camp site. If not we will stick with the BBQ and star gazing only. In any case, all of you are invited to join us!
Item 3: The Rocketry FTX is coming up, if you want to earn your rocketry badge, plan for it now.Details are re-posted here:
rocketry FTX the weekend of Sept. 21 in Wendover, using the c-huts and dining hall. Our plan is to build all 4 rockets, take the tests, launch, and get the patch and badge all in the same weekend. We've done it before and it turned out really well. I know many Cadets may already have their rocketry badge, but they may just want to come and build and launch rockets. This event we are going to do a little fundraising for to lower the cost, we hope, but we generally have to get money in advance for it, and it's around $60 each for the food, rockets, and badges. Hopefully we'll be right around that target number again.
Item 4: Emergency Services Training. Read the following letter to the Wing from the Disaster Relief Officer. Check out the dates, Cadets and Seniors are invited. Cadets should clear any or all dates with your parents / guardians NOW, and let your chain of command know what class(s) you want to attend.
Utah Wing is hosting Disaster Relief Training for its members. FEMA has been aggressively seeking other opportunities to employ CAP personnel in operations, and not just for airborne support, but also ground operations. In the last few days the FEMA Mass Care office has offered CAP a unique chance to host up to ten Point of Distribution (POD) and Shelter Field Guide training courses before the end of FY13, 30 September. Myself and the Emergency Services Director at the Wing Level have come up with a few dates. Aug. 30-31 as the first choice of dates. the next choice would be Sept. 13-14 or Sept. 27-28. There will be a follow up email with the dates with the dates the instructors from FEMA can conduct this training at the UTWG HQ. As of right now we only have space for 50 CAP members to attend with a minimum of 20 members. If we have more then 50 members that would like to attend we will make it work.
If you or members from your Squadron would like to particapate in this training I will need to have a list with NAME, CAPID PHONE, EMAIL. by the 20th of Aug. 2013. Both Sr. Members and Cadets are welcome to attend this training.
Descriptions of the courses are below:
Points of Distribution (POD) Course
PODs are centralized locations where those in need can obtain life sustaining commodities. The participant will recognize the importance of POD planning and execution. The participants as a team will pick a location, determine the commodities that will be distributed, help set up, staff, operate and demobilize a POD.
Class Structure
• 20 or more students per class, open to any member that is at least GES qualified
• Some classroom lecture, but primarily hands-on non-classroom training either outdoors or in open space indoors; the host will need a projection screen, but not a projector as this will be provided by the instructor
• Class is instructed setting up a type I,II and III POD
• Requires 4 hours of instruction
Shelter Field Guide Course
This course prepares participants to use the Shelter Field Guide to manage and operate shelters using fundamental, consistent and flexible principles based on best practices. The participants will be instructed in supporting the Shelter management in setting up dormitory areas, children and family areas, registration areas, and feeding areas. The participants will interact with the shelter staff and survivors to help make sure all the needs are being met. While working in a shelter environment, the volunteers will not be asked to do anything that they do not feel comfortable doing. Upon completion of this course, members should be able to describe fundamental tasks for preparing, opening, maintaining and closing a shelter which they will have a role participating in, describe key relationships required to manage shelters, and be able to locating and use of the Shelter Operations Field Guide.
